A stray dog walked me home from school when I was in the fourth grade.
My mother greeted us at the door, and I asked if I could keep her.
With only a short pause, she ushered us both in and then fed the dog, first.
Growing up, animals were always welcome in our home. Many of them were homeless and/or broken in one way or another. Because of this, I've always felt a deep sense of responsibility to help animals in need, but this work takes patience, open hearts and funding.
Every day, more pets end up in kill shelters around the country. Lucky are those who are rescued by people who care. There are many animal rescue organizations doing this good work. Here are a couple of my local favorites:
