What makes handmade soap so great, anyway?

Handmade Soap Gilded Olive Apothecary

Someone recently asked me,
"So when customers ask why handmade soap is better, or what makes it so great, what do I say?"

She wanted to give the best answer possible, and picked up her pen while she waited for an answer. Now, there's more than one reason why handmade soap is superior to commercial, but if I had to explain it in a minute or less, I'd say this:

The biggest difference between handmade soap and commercially made soap is the copious glycerin content, left in handmade soap.

Glycerin is a humectant. Humectants attract water from the air, onto our skin. It makes our skin feel soft, supple and comfortable. Glycerin is created naturally, as a by-product of the chemical process that creates soap.

Commercially made soaps produce lots of glycerin too, but it's not retained in the soap.  Nope, it's purposefully skimmed off and replaced with chemical synthetics, while the natural glycerin is sold for other purposes.

Manufacturing companies use glycerin for everything from pharmaceuticals to printing. It's a lucrative by-product, and removing it is also why people feel so dry and tight after showering with a commercially produced soap bar.

The small batch soap-maker has no means of removing the glycerin, nor would we want to.
You'll feel the difference the very first time you use a handmade soap. Some things are just worth it.

We all know people who are terrified of bees. But why are bees so quick to sting us? Simply put, they'd sacrifice their lives to protect their young, and the food they make and store for the colony. Honey is bee food.
