She was truly interested and picked up her pen so she could write my answer down, and it was a great question. Honestly, there's several reasons handmade soap is superior, but if I had to explain it in a minute or less, I'd say this:
The biggest difference between handmade soap and commercially made soap is the copious glycerin content, left in handmade soap.Glycerin is a humectant. Humectants attract water from the air, onto our skin. It makes our skin feel soft, supple and comfortable. Glycerin is created naturally, as a by-product of the chemical process that creates soap. Commercially made soaps produce lots of glycerin too, but it's not retained in the soap. Crazy, right? Nope, it's purposefully skimmed off and replaced with chemical synthetics, while the natural glycerin is sold for other purposes. Manufacturing companies use glycerin for everything from pharmaceuticals to printing. It's a lucrative by-product, and removing it is also why people feel so dry and tight after showering with a commercially produced soap bar.
